-When Gutterson opens up his piece, he states, "Green Valley is as much a verb as a noun" he mean that even though it is a place, it is a place that is still growing and adding things to its communities. Although the community is still growing, the rules are as well. It states " no fowl, reptile, fish, or insect may be raised." What community says you cont grow things like that?


What is Gutterson's tone? How does he achieve this tone? Look at specific uses of language, parenthetical notation, and turns of phrase that you you a general feeling of Gutterson's writerly agenda.
-Gutterson's tone is not exactly harsh, but it is very straight forward. He has obviously talked to and learned alot about the people of the community. He does not hide the bad things though. He tells you the happy things, the odd things, and some mean things. The happy things being when he talks about "Cars wound slowly over clean broad streets, ferrying children to swimming pools and backyard barbeques and Complex cinemas." The mean things are not exactly mean as warning such as the neighborhood watch signs.


Do you agree that suburbs are not the safe, selective paradises the purport to be? Provide examples from your own experience as support for your argument.
-I grew up in a neighborhood that sounds just like the one in the beginning of the argument: a golf course neighborhood with parents taking children to the pool or making water parks in their front yards with the water hose. In ways, i believe that the suburbs are safe. The only things ever dangerous in my neighborhood were the teenage boys being immature and breaking windows and running. One very big similarity though is the signs stating that the "neighborhood watch program is in force..." Although we never heard the police were called, there were always signs reminding us that it could happen.
